Firmness refers to the degree and consistency of limits that parents impose on their child’s behaviour. Firm parents clearly articulate the rules they expect their child to follow, and they make demands on the child to behave in a mature and responsible fashion. ---- In contrast, parents who are more tolerant have few rules for their child’s behaviour or have rules but enforce them inconsistently. In the absence of clear rules, children come to feel that it is impossible to know what is, or what is not, acceptable behaviour.
